David and Goliath

The Story

The Israelites were at war with the Philistines. The Philistine army had a giant warrior named Goliath who was over nine feet tall and wore heavy armor. Every day for forty days, Goliath challenged the Israelites to send someone to fight him, but everyone was terrified. David was a young shepherd boy who brought food to his brothers in the army. When David heard Goliath mocking God and God's people, he volunteered to fight the giant. King Saul offered David his armor, but it was too heavy. Instead, David went with just his shepherd's staff, a sling, and five smooth stones from a stream. When Goliath saw David, he mocked him for being just a boy. But David replied, 'You come against me with sword and spear, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty.' David loaded a stone into his sling, aimed at Goliath's forehead, and struck him. The giant fell, and the Israelites won the battle. David showed that with God, even a young person can do mighty things.

Key Bible Verses

“David said to the Philistine, 'You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty.'”

1 Samuel 17:45

“All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord's.”

1 Samuel 17:47

The Moral of the Story

David's victory over Goliath teaches us that courage and faith in God are more powerful than physical strength or size. We shouldn't let fear or intimidation stop us from doing what's right. With God's help, we can overcome challenges that seem impossible. Being young or small doesn't mean we can't make a big difference. We should use the gifts and talents God has given us, just as David used his shepherd skills with the sling.

How to Honor and Glorify God

We can glorify God by having courage to stand up for what's right, even when others are afraid. Like David, we should face our challenges in the name of the Lord, not in our own strength. We honor God by using the gifts and talents He has given us to serve Him and help others. When we succeed, we should give God the glory, not boast about our own abilities. We can trust that 'the battle is the Lord's' and that He will fight for us. Even when we're young or feel inadequate, we can do great things for God when we trust in Him.

Ways to Apply This Story:

  • 1Be brave and stand up for what's right, even when it's scary
  • 2Trust in God's power, not your own strength
  • 3Don't let anyone make you think you're too young or too small to serve God
  • 4Use the gifts and talents God has given you
  • 5Remember that with God, all things are possible
  • 6Give God the glory when you succeed

Let's Talk About It

Discuss these questions with your family or Sunday school class:

1. Why do you think David wasn't afraid of Goliath when everyone else was?

2. What are some 'giants' (big problems) that kids your age might face?

3. What gifts or talents has God given you that you can use for Him?

4. How can you be brave like David this week?
